Description

SKETCH OF EIFFEL TOWER, FRANCE. 1999.

I recalled the first time I was at the Eiffel Tower, I was not able to fully appreciate its beauty. The possible reason being I was young then. We decided to come back at night to have another look to give myself another chance to take in its beauty. The tower at night exudes something different which left an impression.

With the suggestion of drawing an Eiffel Tower, the image of a dark background was in my head with white strokes. Eiffel Tower in the night.

People from all over the world go to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower. Tourists and locals crowd the area. I was reminded of John 12:32 where Jesus said that “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” People are drawn to beauty when it is on display where everyone can see. The lifting up of Jesus turned a horrific death into beauty for anyone willing to partake.

Artist: Pauline Phoon

Pauline Phoon is a Singaporean artist who began publicly showcasing her art in 2021. Her initial works featured pen-and-ink drawings of Singapore’s landmarks. These prints were sold at the Singapore National Gallery’s Gallery Store and Design Orchard Singapore. By 2023, her growing recognition led to invitations to participate in group exhibitions in major art cities like Venice, Rome, and London.

Phoon’s artistic journey is characterized by constant evolution and experimentation with diverse mediums. While her initial focus was on pen-and-ink drawings, she later explored the use of white and iridescent ink on dark backgrounds, creating a distinct visual effect. Her artistic repertoire also includes sumi-e, watercolor, and pigments, all employed to translate her mental imagery onto a tangible canvas. A significant shift occurred in late 2023 when she transitioned from predominantly landscape drawings to abstract art in glass, a glass art titled “B-Infinity” which was exhibited in Singapore, Venice, Rome, and London.

With a background in art and music training since the age of four, the arts are deeply ingrained in Phoon’s personal life, serving as a space for relaxation, contemplation, and self-discovery. As a visionary artist, she continually pushes her boundaries to transform her inner visions and emotions into tangible artistic expressions. Her ongoing artistic evolution promises exciting upcoming artworks and projects.
